With strict deadlines and never ending emails, it’s no wonder why most of us get a little stressed at the office. Too much stress, however, has serious health repercussions and may even make us less productive. Combat stress at work with these helpful tips!
Breathe.
Don’t underestimate the power of a deep breath. If you’re feeling stressed, take a deep breath. Inhale for five seconds, hold it for five seconds, and then slowly exhale through your nose. A deep breath will relax you and give you much-needed mental clarity!
Manage distractions.
While it’s nearly impossible to eliminate distractions and interruptions, you can learn to manage them. Set aside time to conduct in-person meetings or close your door when you need to finish something.
Keep a schedule.
Avoid procrastination! Time management is key to reducing stress. In order to be productive, you need to take a few breaks throughout the day. Schedule a walk or coffee break. Studies show that we do our best work within 90 minutes. After that, we lose focus and are unable to concentrate.
Keep your cool.
In stressful situations you may get a little frustrated, but getting angry doesn’t help you accomplish the task at hand. Learn to manage your frustration. Try a “cooling breath.” This yoga-inspired technique requires you to inhale through your mouth as if sipping through a straw and then exhale through your nose.
Prioritize.
Accomplish the more important tasks first! The sooner you get the harder stuff done, the sooner you’ll be able to relax.
Be good to yourself.
Make sure to get adequate sleep and eat a balanced diet. If your body is stressed and not well rested, your mind won’t be either. Get eight hours of sleep per night and try to eat a low-sugar, high-protein diet.
