The holidays are a time for spending time with friends and family. But when our loved ones aren’t local, holiday travel is necessary and it can be stressful! Whether you’re taking a train, plane, or automobile, stay calm and safe this season with these holiday travel tips!
- Keep an emergency kit in your car. Winter weather may cause delays. Be prepared with adequate food, water, blankets, and flashlights.
- Pack light. Chances are your holiday visits are pretty short, so only bring the necessities. It will help you glide right through the airport since you can avoid the baggage claim.
- Allow extra time to get to and from your destination. Winter weather can slow travel and the holidays can cause heavy traffic. Make sure you’re prepared for delays.
- Avoid announcing your travel plans on social media. Advertising your plans increases your risk of burglary.
- Carry lots of hand sanitizer with you! The holiday season doubles as flu season. Hand hygiene is one of the best ways to fight the spread of germs.
- Bring snacks! If you have a long drive or long layover at the airport, you’re likely going to be hungry. Prepare with snacks! Just keep in mind that if you’ll be going through security at the airport, you need to make sure to adhere to TSA travel restrictions.
- Bring your snow chains! If driving this holiday, make sure to your tire chains are ready in case you encounter any snowy weather.

- Stop your mail and newspapers! When you go away for the holidays, a full mailbox or a driveway littered with papers is an indication to burglars that you’re out of town. Have a friend or neighbor collect them for you or call to place a hold on them.
- Stay hydrated. Winter weather is dry and air travel certainly makes it worse. Drink lots of fluids to stay alert.
