January is National Blood Donor Month. Be a hero this month and donate blood! Whether you choose to donate through the Red Cross or a local hospital, your blood donation makes a huge difference. Blood banks are always in need of donations, and the only way to acquire blood is for people like you to donate. Whether you’re an old pro or have never donated before, here’s what you should know about blood donations!
About blood donations.
Each pint of blood donated can save up to three live! Cancer patients, sickle cell patients, car accident victims, and many others benefit from blood donations. You have the option of donating whole blood, platelets, or plasma. Each type of donation helps in different ways and has their own restrictions as to how frequently you can donate.
Whole blood – every 56 days
Platelets – every 7 days, or up to 24 times/year
Plasma – every 28 days, or up to 13 times/year
Your blood type also plays a role in who can accept your blood, as not all types of blood are a match. Hospitals most frequently request Type O because it’s a more versatile and can be given to more than one blood type.
Eligibility.
Before you donate, make sure you’re eligible.
While these are the basic requirements, there are more restrictions in special cases. If you’ve traveled abroad lately or have just gotten a new tattoo, you may need to wait before you donate blood. For more information about restrictions, check out the Red Cross’s eligibility requirements.
Preparing to donate.
Now that you’ve decided to donate, you can be prepared!
