Handling a Popped Tire While Driving

Handling a Popped Tire While Driving

September 6, 2018Archived, Auto Insurance, LifestyleBailey Helton

This is what you should do if you blow a tire while driving.

Popping a tire while on the road can be a potentially dangerous situation if you do not handle it correctly. In order to handle this issue in the safest, most efficient manner, you should stay calm and take the following steps.

  • Maintain a Firm Grip on the Wheel

When you blow a tire while driving, the sudden action can cause your car to jerk suddenly. If you do not have a firm grip on your steering wheel, this can cause your car to careen out of control. Anytime you are driving, you should maintain a solid grip on the wheel; if you feel yourself blow a tire, make sure you tighten your grip so you can keep your car in your lane.

  • Decrease Speed Gradually

After blowing a tire, your first instinct may be to slam on your brakes. However, this can cause your tires to lose traction on the road and you can skid out of control. Rather than using your brakes, gradually reduce your speed by removing your foot from the accelerator. As you begin to slow, start maneuvering to the side of the road.

  • Pull Off the Road

Once your car’s speed drops to about 20 miles per hour, you are safe to apply your brakes. At this point, you should completely pull off the road and slowly apply your brakes until your car comes to a complete stop.

  • Alert Other Drivers

Before exiting your vehicle to assess the damage, there are a couple of steps you should take. First, make sure that you shift your car into park and apply your parking brake. You also need to activate your hazard lights. This will alert other drivers that you are experiencing car trouble and will warn them that they need to slow down and pass you with caution.

  • Make Repairs

Finally, take the necessary steps to repair or change your damaged tire. If you do not feel safe or do not know how to change your tire, then call roadside assistance for help.

These are the steps that you need to take to safely handle a popped tire while driving. Want another way to stay safe behind the wheel? Make sure you have the proper auto insurance protections in place. For assistance with your car coverage needs, contact the team at Phocus Insurance in Phoenix, Arizona today.
