3 Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating

3 Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating

October 25, 2018Archived, LifestyleBailey Helton

Make sure your kids have a safe Halloween by keeping these trick-or-treating tips in mind.

With Halloween right around the corner, it’s important to get your kids ready for trick-or-treating. While Halloween night is all about fun, candy, and costumes, make sure that you also place a big emphasis on safety. Here are three important tips that you should employ to ensure that your kids stay safe as they trick-or-treat this year.

Choose Costumes Wisely

First things first, your child’s safety is largely dependent on their costume choice. For starters, make sure that the costume your child selects is made from non-flammable materials. This will reduce their fire risk if they come in contact with a home that’s decorated with real candles. You should also steer your child away from costumes that require face masks or other elements that affect their vision. When your child’s vision is obstructed, they are at a higher risk for tripping or running into something and injuring themselves. Finally, if your child’s costume calls for large props like a witch’s broom or a ninja sword, make sure your child knows not to swing it around; they could end up hurting someone on accident.

Set Guidelines for Trick-or-Treating

While younger children need adult supervision, you might feel comfortable sending your older kids out to trick-or-treat with a group of friends. If this is true for you, lay down some ground rules for your children to follow. First, you should set strict guidelines regarding where they are allowed to trick-or-treat. You should have your kids carry a cell phone so they can keep in touch, but also so you can track their location and make sure they aren’t venturing past your boundaries. Also, remind your children that they should never enter a stranger’s car or home. You should organize a plan with them so they know what to do in the event that a stranger approaches them. Finally, warn your child not to dart into the street, as they could get hit by an unsuspecting driver or cause a car accident.

Inspect Candy

It’s also extremely important to warn your kids not to eat any of the candy they collect until they get home. Once they return from trick-or-treating, have them lay out their haul so you can inspect it. Remove any unwrapped, unlabeled, homemade, or unfamiliar treats before allowing your child to dig in. This will ensure that they do not ingest any tainted or harmful candies.

These are three of the important trick-or-treating safety tips that parents should implement this Halloween. Want another way to keep your kids safe this October?
