How to Turn Off Your Utilities in an Emergency

How to Turn Off Your Utilities in an Emergency

December 14, 2017Archived, Homeowners InsuranceBailey Helton

Learn why and how you should shut off your home’s utilities after a natural disaster.

If you are faced with a natural disaster, you should have an emergency action plan.  One of the first things you should do to secure your home and family is shut off your home’s utilities.  Not sure how to turn off your water, natural gas, and electricity?  Learn how to do so today.

Water

During a natural disaster, cracked pipes can result in water contamination.  To prevent this polluted water from entering your home, it’s important that you shut off your water.  First, you’ll have to locate your home’s main shut off valve.  This valve should be located on your home’s main water line.  To shut off your water, turn the handle or knob clockwise until the valve closes completely.  Keep your water shut off until your water supply has been declared safe to drink.

Natural Gas

A gas leak can increase your chances of a house fire.  That’s why it’s important to shut off your natural gas following a natural disaster.  As each home has their own unique gas meter configuration, you may need to contact your local utility company to learn how to safely shut off your gas.  Once you know the process, post the instructions near your gas meter so anyone can shut off the gas in an emergency.  Keep in mind that while you can turn off your gas, you’ll need a certified professional to turn it back on.

Electricity

Electricity is an incredibly dangerous element.  That’s why it’s best to shut off your home’s electricity immediately after a natural disaster.  Fortunately, shutting off your home’s electricity is a pretty easy process.  All you need to do is locate your homes electrical circuit box.  Once you find it, switch off all the circuits before turning off the main circuit (usually located at the top op of the electrical panel).  Refrain from turning your electricity back on until you are certain that there aren’t any gas leaks in your home.

Follow these processes to safely turn off your water, natural gas, and electricity after an emergency.  Remember, another way to secure your home and family following a natural disaster is by making sure you have the proper insurance protections in place.  To get the coverage you need, contact the experts at Phocus Insurance.  Our dedicated team is ready to get you the best policies in Phoenix, Arizona.
