Pets increase your liability because of the chances that they could attack someone. In some states, homeowners will be held responsible for any damage that your pet causes. However, some states do allow a “one free bite” for situations in which people were unaware of their dog’s bite risk. This gives you a free pass, and will pay for the related expenses. However, after this they will review your policy, and likely stop covering your dog.
It is recommended that you buy a policy that will cover you for at least $300,000 if you own a dog. If you own an exotic pet, they will usually not be covered on your homeowners policy.
