The Relationship Between Pets & Homeowners Insurance

July 28, 2014General ArticlesBailey Helton

Almost 68% of Americans report housing some sort of furry friend! But did you know that pet ownership could drastically affect your insurance rate? Pets increase your liability because of the chances that they could attack someone. In some states, homeowners will be held responsible for any damage that your pet causes. However, some states do allow a “one free bite” for situations in which people were unaware of their dog’s bite risk. This gives you a free pass, and will pay for the related expenses. However, after this they will review your policy, and likely stop covering your dog.

It is recommended that you buy a policy that will cover you for at least $300,000 if you own a dog. If you own an exotic pet, they will usually not be covered on your homeowners policy. If your dog has a history of violent behavior, your carrier will be hesitant to insure you. Occasionally, you will come across insurance companies that exclude coverage to entire breeds. A few of the most common excluded breeds are:

  • Akita
  • Alaskan Malamute
  • Chow
  • Doberman Pinscher
  • German Shepherd
  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Rottweiler
  • Siberian Husky
  • Presa Canario
