St. Patrick’s Day has become a staple in American culture. From green attire to tales of leprechauns to a pint of Guinness with corned beef and cabbage, we partake in various holiday traditions. While these traditions are great fun, have you ever wondered where these traditions come from? The answers may surprise you. We’ve got you covered when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day traditions. Check out the reasons behind all of the traditions.
Green All Day
The color green is such a staple of St. Patrick’s Day that Chicago dyes their river green each year. But, why has this color become such a staple? Traditionally, the color that represented St. Patrick was blue, however, it’s thought that the color green was popularized by Irish independence supporters in the 18th century.
Leprechauns
These little guys are thought to come from Irish folklore. They’re thought to be mischievous little buggars that cause lots of trouble. There’s even a myth that wearing the color green makes you invisible to leprechauns to prevent them from pinching you. While we’ve come to think of them today as little men with rosy cheeks that guard at pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, there have been lots of variations for leprechaun creatures throughout history. As far back as the eighth century, water spirits were described as luchorpan, which translates to “little body”.
Corned Beef and Cabbage
While many associate corned beef and cabbage with Irish food, it’s technically not Irish. The tradition came about in the US. Irish immigrants that had come to the US in the late 1800s are thought to be responsible for the now St. Patrick’s Day staple. Simply put, the corned beef was more affordable than other meats and so it became a popular dish.
