Some say the idea for Labor Day came from a machinist by the name of Mathew Maguire. Others say it was the American Federations of Labor’s Patrick McGuire who first came up with the idea in 1882. The facts show that the history of Labor Day is traced back to the violent Pullman strike by workers in the late 1800’s. As a way to help placate workers, President Grover Cleveland created a national holiday on the first Monday of September. The holiday is meant to celebrate the efforts of the American workers and recognize the significance of unions.
In fact, in the 1950’s, more than 50% of workers were unionized in the U.S. In 2012, that number had dropped to 11.8%. Today, Labor Day is a celebration of family and friends, and a sign that summer is just about over.
