The government shutdown in October 2013 is still causing problems, and one of them is that the 2014 tax season is going to start later than usual. Every year, the IRS takes time to run diagnostics and checks in order to make sure that everything is going to work properly before the New Year. Instead, the IRS is running behind due to the lack of employees during a key time of preparation. Filers can submit their taxes after the first of the year, but they won’t be processed until some time between January 28, 2014 to February 4, 2014. The agency still has yet to set a definitive date.
This doesn’t mean that filers should hold off. Getting ready sooner than later means that the taxes are done and out of the way for the year. Filers who expect a refund can have it earlier in the year instead of waiting until the last minute. Submitting early also prevents identity fraud as the IRS flags a Social Security number that has been submitted more than once. Getting ahead of thieves preserves identity and exposes attempts of theft.
