Thanksgiving Home Safety Tips

Thanksgiving Home Safety Tips

November 2, 2017Archived, General Articles, Homeowners InsuranceBailey Helton

Protect your home this Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a day of family, food, and gratitude, but that doesn’t mean you are immune to risk on this day.  Whether you’re staying home or planning on traveling this Thanksgiving, your home faces certain dangers.  Don’t let your holiday festivities get sidetracked by an accident; take these precautions to keep your home safe this Thanksgiving.

If you’re staying home…

If you are going to be home this Thanksgiving and are hosting an event, it’s important that you keep your loved ones safe.  Here are some steps you can take to protect your home and everyone in it.

  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Fire and carbon monoxide poisoning are two of the biggest risks that your Thanksgiving guests face.  However, the damage and injuries caused by these hazards can be prevented by having smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home.  Make sure you have both kinds of detectors on every floor and in every sleeping area of your home.  If you already have them installed, test them to make sure that they are operating properly.
  • Reduce fire risks in the kitchen. Another way to protect your home and its inhabitants, is to mitigate your risk for kitchen fires.  You can reduce your risk by removing any flammable items from the stove and oven areas.  You should remove things like oven mitts, towels, and paper products.  For an extra layer of protection, you should keep a fire extinguisher within easy reach.

If you’re traveling…

If you are going to be away from home this Thanksgiving, your home still faces some serious risks.  Here are some safety precautions you should take.

  • Install a security system. Installing a home security system can help protect your home from burglars, vandals, and squatters while you’re away.  Additionally, many security systems are now equipped with 24-hour fire watch, so installing a system can prevent fire damage as well.
  • Avoid posting about your travels on social media. While you might want to keep your followers updated, revealing that your home will be uninhabited is not the best idea.  If people know that your home is empty, it could become a target for thieves or vandals.  It’s much safer to save your Thanksgiving posts for after you return from your travels.

Follow these safety tips to make sure your home stays safe whether you’re home or away.  What another way to protect your home?  Then make sure you have the right insurance protections in place.  Contact the experts at Phocus Insurance in Phoenix, Arizona to find the right policy to fit your needs.
