From fun at the pool to a morning hike, summer is the perfect time to for outdoor activities. However, it’s important to be careful out in the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun have damaging effects on our bodies, and the scorching midday heat can wreck havoc on our bodies. Ensure that you enjoy fun in the sun responsibly. Check out these tips for sun safety.
- Wear sunscreen. Anytime you step outside, whether it be January or July, overcast or sunny, it’s important to wear sunscreen. Anytime you’re outside you’re vulnerable to UV rays. Be sure to apply sunblock at least 15 minutes before heading outside and reapply it every couple hours.
- Look for “broad spectrum” coverage. There are two types of UV rays that are damaging to your skin. While it was previously thought that only one of the rays was damaging, they both cause damage to your skin, from premature aging to cancer. Ensure that your sunscreen covers both UVA and UVB rays.
- Do your best to stay out of the sun from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The sun is strongest during those hours, increasing your risk of getting burned.
- Wear UV protective sunglasses. UV rays are also damaging to your eyes. Ensure that you protect your eyes and wear the right sunglasses.
- Watch out for heat-related illness. Too much fun in the sun can be dangerous. From heat stroke to heat rash, there are lots of serious heat health issues to be wary of. Know the symptoms so you know when it’s time to get out of the sun.
- Stay hydrated. Your body uses lots of fluid to sweat to stay cool. When you spend lots of time in the sun, ensure that you drink plenty of water.
