“The squeaky wheel gets the oil,” or so the saying goes. In order to keep your vehicle running at peak performance, it’s necessary to make sure your vehicle’s fluids are at their optimum levels. Use this handy guide to vehicular fluids to make sure your car is always in great shape.
Your engine is the heart of your car. Without proper maintenance, your engine can overheat, lock up, or explode (not really, but you can blow a gasket). Checking your oil is not a difficult task; all you need to do is locate your dipstick (which is usually noted by a yellow cap), remove and wipe it down, reinsert the rod, then pull it out once more. With any luck, your fluid line will be at an acceptable level, as indicated by the measurement gauge at the bottom of the dipstick. If it’s low, add more oil! This should be checked regularly at least once a month.
What good is horsepower if you’re stuck in neutral? Transmission fluid allows your car to change gears. Unlike engine oil, however, it’s part of a closed system, meaning it should never be low. If it is low, brown, or smells burnt, it’s time to change it. This should also be checked once a month.
If you’re low on brake fluid, stop lights will soon become your mortal enemy. Similar to your transmission system, this should never be low. Make sure to measure this whenever you check your engine oil, or once a month. The reservoir for brake fluid, located on the side of your engine compartment, should be full and golden brown. If it has lost its golden luster and appears brown, it’s time for a new batch!
