Strange Tax Laws
Tax season is here, and while you still have until April 15th to get your taxes in, the sooner you file them, the sooner you can start enjoying your tax return. If you are stressing out about your taxes, keep these goofy tax laws in mind to help ease you through the process.
- Maryland – Maryland started a $60 a year tax on flushing a toilet in 2004 in order to help update treatment plants and help protect the Chesapeake Bay, which has begun to decline in water quality. The tax was doubled in 2012.
- New York – while New York may be known for having some of the best bagels in the country, they do not come without a high price. Unless you purchase a bagel to go, unsliced and unheated, you will have to pay an 8-cent tax on each bagel you enjoy.
- Arkansas – you may want to think twice about getting a tattoo, body piercing, or electrolysis hair removal in Arkansas since the state has a 6 percent tax on all those activities.
- Maine – Maine has a $1.50 per 100 pounds of tax on all wild blueberries that are either processed within the state or unprocessed but shipped outside of the state in order to help conserve and promote the wild blueberry industry.
- Alabama – if you are looking to play a friendly game of poker with your friends in Alabama, you will have to face a 10-cent tax per deck of cards. Each retailer that sells cards also has to pay an annual license tax of $2.
