The most important factor in the safety of any car is the driver. Therefore, Allstate Insurance notes that the first step to keeping teen drivers safe is to educate them about driving modern cars. Make sure they know how to use anti-lock brakes and other such features so they can handle unexpected situations well.
When it comes to the car itself, Allstate says that the brand isn’t as important as the safety features the vehicle includes. Look for electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock brakes, modern crash structures, and side air bags. The newest cars must have anti-lock brakes by law, and crash structures are produced in accordance with the latest regulations. ESC became standard on every car in 2012, as did ESC. Side air bags, however, still are not mandatory.
Because of the advances in recent cars, the safest ones for your teens are the newest ones. If you can’t afford a new one, get a used one that’s no older than the 1999 model year. In that year, side impact-resistant structure and dual-front airbags became mandatory.
