When it comes to health insurance, there are many options. However, your policy likely fits into one of two types of policies; an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) or a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization). Each type of policy has its cost and benefits. Learn about the difference between the two so that you’re best able to make the right decision for your health needs. Here’s what to know about HMOs and PPOs.
An HMO offers you affordable coverage. Under an HMO, you choose a primary care physician who is your go-to for all your medical issues. Should you need additional assistance, you’re then referred to a specialist within your network. Under an HMO, you do not have any coverage for out-of-network care, except for extreme circumstances where medical emergencies come into play. Filing a claim with your HMO policy is relatively easy. Since all your medical care is in-network, you typically don’t have to file a claim, making it less of a hassle.
A PPO offers you more freedom to choose your healthcare providers. You’re able to see any doctor you want as long as they’re within your network. You’re even still able to see doctors outside your network, but keep in mind that these services will be more expensive. PPOs tend to be more expensive overall, and you will have to file a claim with your insurance. Often you pay the doctor directly and then contact your insurance provider to reimburse you for the costs.
When deciding whether an HMO or a PPO is best for your health needs, ensure that you weigh the costs and benefits. Choose the right health insurance so that you can stay healthy year-round.
