Holiday driving is more dangerous than driving at other times due to increased traffic and longer drive times. And at any time of year, drinking and driving don’t mix. But during holiday travel times the mixture becomes even more deadly. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows that the normal average of 28 percent of traffic fatalities related to alcohol jumps to 40 percent over the Christmas/New Year period.
During holiday travel the amount of traffic increases and includes proportionately younger drivers traveling to and from college. Younger drivers tend to have more accidents than more mature drivers. Adding the holiday alcohol factor into the equation, the fatalities increase dramatically.
The Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) says that the number of Americans on road trips of more than 50 miles increases by 23 percent over the Christmas/New Years holiday. The average trip during this period is over 275 miles, meaning travelers are driving longer hours. So increased fatigue becomes a factor.
