When you rent a car, you don’t think much about insurance. You’re excited about your trip and you want to enjoy yourself, an accident is the last thing on your mind. However, sometimes they happen. When they do, you want to ensure that you’re covered. Make sure that you know how your personal auto insurance gives you coverage for your rental car.
In the event of an accident:
Should you have a little mishap while on the road in a rental vehicle, your regular car insurance should give you coverage as long as you’re in the US. You’ll have liability coverage and if you have comprehensive or collision coverage, that should carry over as well. Just keep in mind that rather than dealing with just your insurance and the other driver’s insurance, you’ll also need to involve the rental company. Before you head on over to the rental counter, contact your insurer to make sure that you’re covered.
Look into additional credit card coverage:
If you pay for your rental car with a credit card, your credit card company may give you additional rental coverage. Should you get into an accident where damages exceed the limits of your policy, certain credit cards will give you secondary coverage to cover some of the extra damage. Before you rely on this additional coverage, be sure to call your credit card company to ensure they off this coverage.
Indicate all drivers using the rental car:
When you rent a car, the driver is responsible for any accidents. Be sure that you notify the rental company of any additional drivers so that you can ensure that you will have insurance coverage. If you fail to notify them and you get into an accident you may not get any coverage.
